Your full risk, at its very worst, is being pushed back 2-3 years.

Fear grabs a hold on your mind and freezes you. Fear emotionally drags you through the mud of every situation. Fear makes you feel like everyone will judge you. Fear is selfish. Fear is controlling. Fear is the enemy. And yet we continue to dance with fear and let it move us.

Fear is real but once you decide fear isn’t real…poof its gone. It really is that simple.

Rejection and being nervous to face rejection is all fear. ‘I’m afraid of how others will see me’…But fear is a choice. You can choose fear isn’t real.

How?

My favorite way is to see opportunity in everything. Rookies will often look at the doors and be afraid of every no behind the door. Where someone who chooses fear isn’t real sees that they’re ‘20 DMs’ from a yes. “I just need 19 nos on average and I get a sale so how can I burn through those nos as fast as possible”. Every rejection pushes you closer and closer to success and as you get better it takes less and less rejection to get a yes.

Understand fear is selfish by nature. You’re prejudging yourself for all that you see is wrong when 2 days from now the person who’s door you knocked will 100% not be thinking of you unless you closed them and they’re getting installed or serviced.

Last important note…99% of the time when a homeowner says no they’re really saying no to the product based on their current situation / stage of life…they’re not saying no to your identity or person. They don’t even know you. If you can detach a no from personal rejection you are choosing fear doesn’t exist.

So.

Remember that fear is a choice. If you choose fear doesn’t exist it doesn’t, and the faster you can embed this on your neural pathways the better because you’ll default to selfish fear.

See opportunity in everything. All rejection is leading you closer to what’s meant for you.

Rejection on the doors is often never personal. They don’t know you personally. Don’t take it personally.

Today’s post is an extension of yesterday's…why you ask? Because it’s that freaking important.

Your motivation behind your action has always been one of the most important reference points in human history. It’s why our court system places heavy emphasis on ‘intent’. The intent behind a crime escalates the sentencing more than the crime itself. We place heavy value on each others ‘free will’ or ‘agency’. You have the ability to make choices so why did you choose to do this? Simply by chance you didn’t really intend this outcome, or you were deliberately intending for this outcome to happen.

Jeff Mendez, industry legend, has a great training program called ‘Live Life By Design’ it’s kinda his whole thing. And it’s built on the idea that you can live your life by design, not by default and that’s built on the foundation that your motivation and why behind your actions matter and can be controlled.

A more extreme version of living life without a why or without intent is ‘negligence’. When something bad happens because you didn’t take the time or give appropriate attention you were negligent. Most people live life by default negligent. They don’t take responsibility for bad outcomes, rather they blame and they don’t proactively focus their attention they react. Don’t be this person.

Just like for this series, before I even announced it, I designed it. I designed each day to build on the day before and to all communicate a specific message.

In sales, every action you take is communicating. Most don’t pay attention to their behavior until they feel like they’re under a spotlight.

Why?

Because life is better designed.

Taking this a layer deeper → Why do you wake up in the morning? Sure you have X priority…sure wife and kids…sure… no really why do you wake up in the morning? Do you feel an immense responsibility to your spouse? Do you feel ownership over the stewardship of your kids? Do you feel tied to the outcome of those in your office? Every day matters and you have an opportunity to be a passive observer in every room you're in or to be the glue.

Feel the responsibility of being a good spouse and understand that you have the daily opportunity to make your spouses day or to let them go on lonely and disconnected.

Feel the ownership and stewardship of your kids knowing you have the daily opportunity to give them a great life and childhood and set them up to make the world better than they’re growing up in.

Feel tied to the outcomes of those around you. Your success isn’t enough, you have the daily opportunity to add value and make the lives of those around you better.

These are why’s big enough to wake up. Not just ‘I have a wife’, ‘I have kids’, ‘I have co-workers’…No You have responsibilities and stewardships of souls. Real people who are willing to spend their very precious time in the same room as you. Life is short and getting in a room with people is special.

Design every aspect of how you want others to feel and what you want them to know. Practice it. It hard, time and energy consuming, and requires more of you than you think you have…but you have it. Showing up is a muscle, you have to consistently work it to build it up.

Show up, with passion, by design…every day.

This is one of my favorite graphics of all time from Simon Sinek. It tells the story of (from an organizations perspective) of the best way to communicate brand value. As the story goes: most people tell you what they do, some tell you how they do it, but few tell you why they do it. The most successful companies or brands flip this and start with why they do things.

This is 100% true from both an organizational and individual perspective. As we’re talking about ‘facing rejection’ this week another factor that helps you take rejection head on is having core values bigger than the rejection you face.

If you needed $1000 for a surgery for your mom you would face almost infinite rejection until you were able to get the $1000. Why? Because all others opinions fall short of you saving your mom. Your ‘why’ is bigger than the rejection you face.

So why is rejection on the doors so hard? Your core values aren’t worth the public ‘humiliation’. You value the opinions of people behind doors you’ve never seen to be bigger than your goals and values.

So today as you’re knocking, probably right now…I’m writing this at prime time…define your values and make them BIGGER than the rejection you’ll face. I value my family’s financial stability more than the rejection I face. I value my relationship with God more than rejection I face. I value my truck more than the rejection I face. I value my goals more than the rejection I face. I value where I live more than the rejection I face. I value X more than the rejection I face.

Write down what you value more than rejection, keep it in your wallet or pocket and anytime you slow down look at it to remind you of your core values.

The more you understand WHY you do what you do and understand you’re in full control to accept or change that why, the more confident you’ll become.

I don’t want to use the illustration of a 3rd world country lightly. A lot of people in these environments face real and hard challenges every day that we don’t have to deal with in America, but I think this is perfect in framing how your self perspective is the difference not your environment.

Almost everyone I know who went on a mission trip to Africa comes back and says ‘they’re just the happiest people’ — and then compare their living situation to their 3 story million dollar home in suburban USA. This mentally associates in our minds ‘happiness’ with wealth and status. The reality is wealth and status have nothing to do with happiness if we choose to disconnect them.

Who do you say you are?

Are you a winner? Are you accepted? Are you welcomed? Are you chosen? Do you have a purpose? Are you fighting for something bigger than yourself?

In spite of all the present circumstances is there something bigger that makes the struggle worth it?

I personally choose to find my value and identity in what Jesus says about me in the Bible. I am holy, righteous and redeemed. I am a saint. I am free. While I don’t always live my life to this standard, Jesus has covered the gap between my shortcomings and called me holy. So I aim to act in a way worth of who Jesus says I am. I am honest because a holy and righteous person is honest. I am loving and caring because a man of virtue and value is loving and caring, etc. And when I fall short, almost every day, I thank the Lord for filling the gap on my behalf. This level of faith is a strong identity change that has helped me work and contribute harder than I ever thought possible.

A lot of people identify themselves with their shortcomings: I’m a smoker, I’m lazy, I’m arrogant, I’m…fill in the blank. Regardless if you occasionally smoke or sleep all day from time to time, saying you’re lazy will keep you in the track of being lazy. You’re consistently re-aligning your identity to the shortcoming.

Then people tie their happiness to the contrast of their self talk and become miserable. “Nothing ever works out for me” “I’m not good enough” “I can’t…” in this zone people are the most selfish and unhappy.

Now the point:

Choose to align your identity with what builds you up. Are you built up calling yourself lazy or diligent, regardless if your actions follow right now. Your identity is defined by how you think of yourself. People call this stupid, people say positive self talk doesn’t really work or it’s ‘fake it ‘till you make it’ mentality. The reality is, if you say you’re fit, you’ll find yourself in the gym a lot more than someone who doesn’t. Your inner heart and integrity won’t let you lie to yourself without you getting majorly depressed, so do what you say you’re going to do and say you’re capable of doing great things.

This is important because, you face rejection every day. People will say mean and untrue things about you and if your identity isn’t rock solid you’ll start to believe them, become discouraged, quit and then resent yourself a little because you let yourself quit something you said you would do.

Align your identity with the person you want to become, holy, honest, caring, servant, etc. And then when someone calls you a lying solicitor (because they’ve been burned by dishonest people) you know in your heart that you #1 can do hard things that you said you would do it and #2 know you’re walking in integrity and you believe that you are doing things the right way. Their mean comments fade away.

This person isn’t thrown off by an angry home owner.
This person isn’t desperate for a sale.
This person isn’t going to cheat the system for an extra $5k.

Choose your identity wisely, pick values and missions that are good. Then walk in integrity, honest dealings, and purpose. Watch as your confidence skyrockets and how no shakiness of this world can move you because you know you’re doing good with good intentions. Their no doesn’t shake you or move your mission.

I started my d2d career in the summer of 2018 where I was a 22 year old junior in college struggling to find my place in the world. I remember distinctly having difficult conversations with my mom frustrated knowing my time to enter adulthood was here but I had no clear picture or map of what that would look like.

I hated school and all my friends were graduating and ‘settling down’… I knew I was made for bigger things than a simple finance job but I had no idea what shape that would take.

Enter my buddy, Kenneth Kilpatrick! He had tried to recruit me to sell with him before but this time I was ready for a big shake up (so when recruiting if not this summer you never know when the person will be ready).

I left home for the first time (my college was in my home town) and moved west to Bay Area California!

Then I had the most transformative experience of my life. I made good money, but the person I became in the process was SO MUCH better! First month and a half was a struggle but after I built up some character, I felt like I could face anything. And that continued when I got home!

OTD Summer 2026 Overview:

I thought today’s message would be extra-relevant to you and is a little extra content before we get into the heat of the OTD Summer Content! I hope this adds value to you!

Today’s post will be really simple but something you have to be actively conscious of AT ALL TIMES this summer. This will make or break your recruiting season this year.

Every door you knock, every morning meeting you run, every post you make, every action you take is consistently building your story. And your story is what will power your recruiting during and post summer! After all recruiting is just story telling. The people who recruit lights out are the ones who are masters of their own story. They document everything, have the receipts and are really good at telling that story. Their stories usually start with a level of personal success and are paired with a line of success from other people. Where most fail is the documentation and presentation of that story. What are your wins? What are the wins of your teams? Where are you posting those?

People join a sales team for 3 reasons:

1. Growth

2. Connection

3. Significance

When people join it’s because they’re sold on the dream, the people, the challenge. Your job is to remove all friction from introducing them to your org/team and getting them to mentally say yes because they want one of the 3. The biggest objection to joining a sales force is the belief it won’t work for them. In your storytelling you have to be focused on building, building, building social proof. It has to work for you because it’s already working for all of these people. And the best way to do that is by consistently sharing wins every week on social, primarily instagram or linkedin. All digital d2d business happens here.

So this summer, be hyper focused on documentation.

1. How am I documenting the wins

2. How am I communicating the wins that builds social proof

If you crush this with your team this summer, you will recruit lights out in the post-summer season and 2027 will be bigger than 2026. This is a self feeding cycle that eats momentum. Once the rock starts rolling down the hill there’s no stopping what you can achieve.

Last year I wrote to the entire Solar Pros sales force every day (Monday-Saturday) during ‘Summer To Pro’. At first it was a campaign to raise the baseline of rep production to 3 installs per week or 39 installs over the summer. As the weeks went by, I had incredible conversations with people who were having their mindsets on life and work change. That’s when Summer to Pro became my favorite project to work on. Everyday I got to share what motivates me, what I’m learning and connect with thousands of sales reps who are having their best days, weeks, and months.

That’s the mission of Off The Doors, to share the love of the game of sales and inspire people to challenge themselves, raise their baseline, elevate their tribe and have the best summer of their life.

Off The Doors is not affiliated with ANY sales org or product. I’m not going to tell you this summer that one product or company is better than the other.
